MID SEASON REVIEW - RESERVES

After a couple of lean years in the reserves with low numbers and consistently having to call in under 19s to make a side, the first focus was to get a good number of players to be available each week when the season started which, so far we have been successful in doing so. This is a credit to the guys who have been getting there week in week out even when results haven’t been great.

After preseason and heading into our practice matches we felt that if we could get everyone available and injury free we would be very competitive against most sides. Unfortunately for a variety of reasons this hasn’t quite been the case. In any given week we have had a minimum of 5 changes to the side so stability and consistency has been something we struggled with particularly in the first 5 rounds when we went winless.

However, as we have progressed and I have learnt more about the players and they have learnt more about me. We are starting to see some real improvement and consistency across the board. Back to back wins against Wyndhamvale and St Albans were just reward for the amount of effort the guys had been putting in every week and things are definitely heading in the right direction.

Although the first 9 rounds have only given us 2 wins, there have been games against Spotty, Caroline Springs and Werribee where 10 to 15 minutes of footy have cost us the win and we have lost by under 3 goals in each of these games. Had we been a bit more consistent in these games we could easily be on the positive side of the ledger with 5 wins to our name.

In saying all of this I can’t fault the effort or attitude under some pretty tough circumstances of not having everyone available each week and having a first year coach still learning. I really believe if we can stick with it and get more consistent numbers to training and being available every week we will have a really enjoyable second half of the season with more wins, starting this week with Caroline Springs!
